cullen+them is an intergenerational performing arts organization making socially conscious work and building empathetic community. Our mission is to foster active and compassionate exchange through dialogue, artmaking and performance. We believe that the best way to create change and transcend division is through live gathering and moving together. Contact is an essential part of learning to understand one another and to recognizing parts of ourselves in others.

Presenting Custom-made, performed by Hannah Cullen and Gabriel Nieto. Video Design by Em Watson.

We are the mild mannered
Fiercely lined ones
Who’ve stepped up to
battle/speak.
We have no tolerance for
hatred and are asking
peacefully that you disarm
your fear of the unknown
to join our ranks.
We are nonviolent.
We are not polite.

Hannah Cullen is a native New Yorker and lifelong choreographer. She creates work that incorporates movement, writing, and social activism and has a BFA in Dance from NYU/Tisch School of The Arts. Before attending Tisch, Hannah studied at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and was a founding member of the collaborative, choreographic company Young Dance Collective.

Hannah’s first evening length work, Us, Me, They, She, tackled gendered inequality, exploring the ways in which expectations associated with gender influence and affect our individual identity, and how that in turn affects the way we view women in our society. Most recently Hannah's work has appeared in the Theater of the Resist series at the Met Breuer and she is currently writing a play about listening as a tool for bridging conflict between people with opposing moral values. Her work utilizes speaking and movement and oscillates between highly physical and highly pedestrian with the goal of bringing an honest human experience to the stage.
